In December 2024, the Figgers Foundation distributed tablets to students at Freedom
Shores Elementary, a Title 1 school serving many low-income families. This initiative ensured
that students could access digital learning tools at home, helping bridge the technology
gap and supporting their education beyond the classroom.
Dr. Sharrie Vereen, the school’s Exceptional Student Education (ESE) coordinator with over
15 years of experience, emphasized the impact of these devices on students with special
needs. The tablets allow them to reinforce lessons learned in school, providing the additional
support and time they need to succeed.
Expanding this initiative allows more students and families to access digital resources,
fostering greater educational engagement and even assisting parents with job searches.
Education starts at home, and closing the digital divide plays a vital role in addressing the
broader wealth gap.

earning their diplomas, The Figgers Foundation made a significant impact by distributing
tablets to students lacking reliable access to technology at home. This initiative aims to
bridge the digital divide, ensuring that every student has the tools necessary
for academic success.
With these devices, students can complete coursework, conduct research, and access
educational resources that are critical for their learning and future opportunities.
The tablets also serve as a gateway for students to explore career pathways, apply for

achievement. Principal Carolyn Taylor emphasized the profound effect this initiative will
have on students, stating that having access to technology is essential for educational
success and future readiness. She highlighted that these devices empower students
to take control of their learning and unlock opportunities that may have previously
seemed out of reach.
This partnership between Florida Futures Academy and The Figgers Foundation
exemplifies the power of community investment in education. By equipping students with

On November 10th morning, the Riviera Beach Senior Center was abuzz with excitement.
Seniors who normally gathered for morning coffee and light conversation now found
themselves eagerly awaiting something different—an opportunity to bridge the gap
between their world and the digital age.
Local leaders and volunteers had arrived with stacks of sleek, lightweight tablets, each one
carefully programmed to help seniors stay connected with their loved ones, access essential
health services, and explore the vast resources of the Internet. It wasn’t just a technology
giveaway—it was a new beginning.
For Gloria Simmons, a retired teacher who had spent much of her time reminiscing about
the past, the tablet was more than just a device. It was a window into the lives of her
grandchildren, who lived across the country. “I miss their faces,” she admitted, holding the
tablet hesitantly. A volunteer sat beside her, showing her how to open a video call app.
Minutes later, her granddaughter’s face filled the screen. “Grandma, is that you?” The child
squealed with excitement. Gloria’s eyes glistened as she reached out instinctively toward the
screen. “I can’t believe I can see you so clearly,” she whispered.
Across the room, James Holloway, an 82-year-old Navy veteran, was exploring the device
for a different reason. His memory wasn’t what it used to be, and keeping track of doctor’s
appointments and medications had become a daily struggle.
A New Connection: How Technology Transformed Seniors
at Riviera Beach

A volunteer guided him through the tablet’s built-in health apps, where he could
schedule reminders for his prescriptions and even have virtual check-ins with his doctor.
“So, this thing tells me when to take my meds?” he asked, eyebrows raised. When the
volunteer nodded, James chuckled, shaking his head. “Well, that’s one less thing
to worry about.”
Not everyone was immediately comfortable with the new technology. Mildred Johnson,
79, had never used a touchscreen before and was hesitant to even turn on the device.
What if I press the wrong button?” she asked, hands trembling slightly. A patient
volunteer guided her through the basics, and soon she was scrolling through news
articles and browsing family photos sent by her niece. “I feel like I’m part of the world
again,” she said, marveling at how easily she could stay informed and connected.
As the day went on, the room was filled with laughter, the occasional happy tear, and
a shared sense of discovery. Friends showed each other how to take pictures, send
messages, and read books digitally. By the time the event wrapped up, discussions had
already begun about forming a digital book club, where seniors could read and discuss
novels together online.
For many, the fear of technology had been replaced with excitement. The tablets weren’t
just tools—they were lifelines, bringing families closer, providing health resources, and
opening doors to a world that had once felt distant. As the seniors left the center that
evening, clutching their new devices, they didn’t just carry technology with them. They
carried a newfound sense of confidence, connection, and belonging.
And for many, it was just the beginning.

For the past six months, she has dedicated herself to helping youth transition from foster

A Florida man walks free after spending decades in prison for a
wrongful conviction
Thomas Raynard James was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1991 and spent 32 years
in prison. With the help of the Figgers Foundation and Attorney Natalie Figgers, he was
exonerated, and freed in 2022.
The Figgers Foundation helped free Thomas James, who was wrongfully convicted and
spent 32 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Arrested in 1991 for a 1990 murder,
he was mistaken for someone else, yet no one believed his innocence. “Just imagine that
you’re being charged, tried, and convicted for a crime that you do not know of; you have
nothing to do with it,” James recalled.
A Figgers Foundation employee discovered his story and brought it to Freddie Figgers, who
turned to his wife, Attorney Natalie Figgers. Despite being eight months pregnant, Natalie
took on James’ case, reviewing paperwork even while in labor. To this very day, Natalie is
recognized by me, and she knows this as my hero. She listened when nobody else did. She
acted when nobody else would, James said.
Natalie’s dedication led to his release, and for the first time in decades, someone had truly
heard his cries. The Figgers Foundation didn’t just secure his freedom; they helped him
reintegrate into society, providing humanitarian aid, a mobile phone, and a tablet to help
him adjust.
“I want to tell the world what Natalie Figgers, Freddie Figgers, and the Figgers
Foundation have done for me. They gave me my life back that had been stolen, and then
they aided and assisted in helping to restore my life,” James said. Grateful for their support,
he emphasized their genuine commitment to helping others. That’s just the way they are.
It’s a given that they will have a foundation that does the things that they do.

The Figgers Foundation aids the wrongfully convicted man, Thomas
James, in rebuilding his life
The Figgers Foundation provided Thomas James, a wrongfully convicted man, with
essential technology and support to help him reintegrate into society, highlighting their
commitment to improving the lives of those who have suffered wrongful convictions.
The Figgers Foundation has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting those
who have suffered injustices. Thomas James was wrongfully convicted of a murder he did
not commit and spent three decades in prison. Arrested in January 1990 and convicted in
1991 for armed robbery, first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and armed burglary, he
faced a life sentence for crimes he had no connection to. The conviction weighed largely
on testimony during the trial,” said Attorney Natalie Figgers. One eyewitness, Dorothy
Walton, testified, “I am positive of it; I will never forget his face.
Through Natalie Figgers’ advocacy, James’ conviction was overturned on April 7, 2022, as
there was no physical evidence linking him to the crime. Upon his release, the Figgers
Foundation became his first pillar of support, helping him reintegrate into a world that had
drastically changed.
They provided him with his first-ever cell phone and tablet, tools that became essential in
rebuilding his life. “The technology that the Figgers Foundation has provided me with,
these gadgets, was essential to my transition back into society,” James said.
Year in Review
Beyond technology, the Foundation provided him with humanitarian aid, ensuring he had
clothing, a meal, and even a watch on his first day home. For weeks, they continued to
supply him with essentials, underscoring their dedication to community support. The work
that they do for the communities and the services that they provide, from a technical
standpoint, is so essential to people being able to not get lost in the south, so to speak,
because most people can’t afford to keep up with real-time society,” James stated.
The Figgers Foundation remains committed to helping underserved communities
stay connected to modern advancements. Their ongoing efforts to provide resources
and technology to those in need reflect their unwavering mission to uplift and support
individuals like Thomas James, proving that no one should be left behind in today’s world.
Using these devices, he was able to
search for a job, schedule appointments,
and adapt to modern life. “It’s hard for
me to just sit down and try to put into
words how impactful these things
have had on my life. Because as a free
person in today’s time, like in real-time,
I don’t know what life is like without
