Introduction
In December, 2021 there was a strong resurgence of COVID-19 in the United States. From July till December 2021 it was resulting from the increased transmissibility of the Delta variant and faltering vaccination. The elderly population (65 and above) was the worst affected from the different variants of Omicron COVID-19.
The Commissioner Kionne McGhee, District – 9, envisioned an innovate idea to safeguard the elderlypollution of the Miami District – 9. The Commissioner realizing that the COVID-19 variants in the futurewill keep threatening the lives of even the vaccinated population, envisioned to empower the mostsusceptible population (65 years and older) with mobile phones that offered non-contract infraredthermometer and further have the provision for telehealth sessions.
Miami Dade COVID – 19 Hot Spot
Omicron COVID-19 variants are really threating the lives and wellbeing of populous, especially that of the elderly (65 and older) citizens. The following data collected by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows the Miami as the hotspot of the COVID-19.
Senior Citizens at Risk
The elderly population of the Miami Dade is the worst affected by COVID-19 variants. The following data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows dangers from real patient’s data.
This following chart shows for each age group the number of people per 100,000 that were newly admitted to a hospital with Covid-19 each day, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dips and spikes could be due to inconsistent reporting by hospitals.
As the data clearly shows, the elderly (55 and older) population is worst affected and at greatest risk by the current pandemic and the Omicron variants.
McGhee Safety Net for Seniors Initiative
In comes Commissioner Kionne McGhee’s innovative plan to offer the elderly (55 and older) citizens of Miami Dade County with health phones and the Cellular and Health Data services for FREE

Physical Distribution
The Office of the Commissioner Kionne McGhee worked diligently to help deliver and educate the senior citizens on this initiative. To ensure the best coverage for the Senior citizens, the Commissioner’s Office, setup different venues on key locations at times most suitable for the public to come and get their phones.
The Figgers Foundation, ensured that the Call Center and Technical Support are available for the senior citizens before the rollout of the program. In fact there have been tens of support calls answered by the technical support to help senior citizen better understand the offer and use their phones. The phones are comprehensively covered by the provider and assisted online 24 x 7.

The Commissioner Kionne McGhee made time from his busy schedule to be present at each of the physical distributions. He helped firsthand the senior citizens eligible for the program to learn about the phones, the options available to them, the coverage offered by the program etc.
