Empowering Lives Through Technology at Historic Tabernacle Church
January 05, 2025In January, The Figgers Foundation had the privilege of visiting the Historic Tabernacle Church in West Palm Beach, Florida. The church, a cornerstone of its community, welcomed our initiative to distribute tablets to seniors and children with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This effort aimed to bridge the digital divide and provide access to essential technology for education, communication, and personal development.
As the distribution began, the excitement was palpable. Seniors eagerly unboxed their tablets, many holding such a device for the first time, while young children marveled at the opportunities that lay before them. Betty Fredrick, President of the Senior Ministry at Tabernacle Baptist Church, voiced her appreciation, stating, "We are thankful and excited about this program. We appreciate everything The Figgers Foundation has done and will continue to do for our community." Her words underscored the significance of providing technological access to those who need it most.
Among the recipients was a young church member who expressed her enthusiasm and planned to use her tablet to "connect with the world and read more." Her excitement reflected the transformative power of technology as a gateway to knowledge, exploration, and personal growth. Another decisive moment came from a visually impaired church member who explained how the tablet would allow him to take courses to improve his life. Unlike his phone, which posed limitations, the larger screen and accessibility features of the tablet made learning and everyday tasks more manageable. His story was a testament to the empowerment that technology can provide.
The initiative's impact extended beyond the devices themselves. It represented an investment in the community, fostering inclusivity and opportunities for learning, independence, and connection. The event was not just about handing out tablets—it was about opening doors and breaking down barriers for those who had previously struggled to access digital resources.
Looking ahead, The Figgers Foundation remains committed to ensuring that technology reaches those who need it most. Our visit to Historic Tabernacle Church reminded us of the difference that targeted community partnerships can make. We are grateful for the warm reception from the church leadership and congregation, and we look forward to future collaborations that will further our shared goal of fostering digital inclusion and equity.
The success of this initiative reaffirmed the importance of providing resources that empower individuals and strengthen communities. The Figgers Foundation will continue to work toward bridging the digital divide, ensuring that access to technology is not a privilege but a right for all. We can create a more connected, informed, and engaged society through collective action, community support, and meaningful partnerships.
