The Figgers Foundation and Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services have joined forces to empower youth transitioning from foster care, providing them with essential tools for independent living.

In the heart of Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, life coach Shirley is making a difference. For the past six months, she has dedicated herself to helping youth transition from foster homes and group homes into independent living. “It takes a village,” Shirley recalls her mother’s wisdom, a sentiment that rings true in her daily work. 

The partnership between Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services and the Figgers Foundation exemplifies this village mentality. Together, they are committed to equipping youth with the tools they need to succeed. One of Shirley’s clients, a recent high school graduate, is a testament to the impact of this collaboration. Aspiring to become a web designer, the young woman has found a newfound passion and creativity thanks to the tablet provided by the Figgers Foundation. “That’s all she talks about,” Shirley shares, “Every meeting, every time I see her, she’s speaking about how the tablet helps her be more creative.” 

For many of these young adults, the provision of tablets goes beyond just technology. Living in group homes, they often lack access to personal devices like cell phones or iPads. According to Shirley, giving out these tablets—which come with SIM cards—is a big step in the right direction toward closing the digital gap. Many of the young people she works with are not able to access the internet or cell phones at home. The tablets offer a way for vital communication in addition to fostering creativity and learning. 

Having been with Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services for six months, Shirley’s dedication is unwavering. “I believe I’m going to be here for many more years to come,” she says. For Shirley, being a life coach is more than a job; it’s a calling. “Life coaching is not just a temporary position. It’s a permanent position because you make an impact on the kids, on the people you are touching every day.”
